Trampolines are one of the easiest ways to entertain and get a natural high. The adrenaline rush from jumping on trampolines can get addicting for some. While I’m not a fan of trampolines, I get why people would love them.
However, I have had friends come up to me after a session of jumping mindlessly and ask, “why do my ribs hurt after trampoline?”
That is why, folks, I don’t like to jump, knowing I’d be landing badly. So, why would anyone get hurt from a seemingly harmless mode of having fun? There could be a multitude of reasons.
Reasons for Pain in the Ribs After Trampoline Jumping
The chest or rib region of the body is one of the most sensitive parts of the human body. While it’s strong enough to withstand high amounts of impact forces, they are known to be bruised easily from compression force or blunt force.
Compression on the Chest from Trampoline Jumping
What happens when you jump up and down on a trampoline? If you do it correctly, you’d be jumping on your legs only. And your leg muscles are strong enough to absorb the impact. They were made to compress and extend when needed.
However, some muscles on your body, like the chest muscles, were neither made to absorb impact forces nor made to compress. They are only there to support the ribs.
If your ribs are hurting after trampoline jumping, you most likely messed up in your technique which made you land on your chest region rather than on your legs or back.
Aged and Weak Bone Structure
Not everyone who lands badly on a trampoline experiences pain afterward. Young people can shrug it off like it’s nothing. However, adults over the age of 30 and people with weak bone structures will suffer the most from a bad technique.
The ribs are joined together at the sternum, which sits right in the middle of your chest. Middle-aged people and people diagnosed with weak bones can easily break or loosen the joints. And the resulting bruises will cause you mild to severe pain.
Objects on the Trampoline
Pain from trampoline jumping isn’t normal. Something irregular must have happened to give you pain in your chest. One of the reasons, however slightly, is that there could have been an object on the trampoline that could have bruised your chest muscles and hit your ribs.
Even a simple drop on a small stone or any tough object is enough to cause you pain. Try to remember if you felt any sharp pain when you came down and landed horizontally on the trampoline bed.
Here’s the Bottom line,
If you feel pain in your ribs, it may be caused by,
- Chest muscle sprain from sudden and imperfect landing
- The weak bone structure results in a bruised rib or hurts sternum-rib joints
- Cracked ribs (it’s extremely rare, don’t decide until after you’ve done an x-ray)
- Hard objects on the trampoline bed
Final Words
“Why do my ribs hurt after trampoline suddenly when I didn’t experience it before?”, that’s what one of the members on an online forum was asking. I think you know what happened. The most probable reason would be a bad landing on a small object on the trampoline bed. If it’s not a broken rib issue, you’ll be fine in a week.
